Last updated: 2026-02-22
Also seen as: pending next steps, next steps pending
Definition
Pending next steps usually means the team has not finalized whether your next step is interview, hold, or closeout.
What’s usually happening behind the scenes
Recruiters often wait for interviewer feedback, hiring manager review, or scheduling availability. In some flows, this status appears after employer asked for more information or interview feedback pending.
Why it stays in this status
Decision batching and process handoffs commonly keep this label unchanged. Generic portal labels can also lag because of ATS workflow behavior, as outlined in how ATS automation changes “Application Received” and “Pending”.
How long it usually lasts
It often lasts several days to a few weeks.
What usually doesn’t help
Checking the portal multiple times daily usually does not change queue timing.
When action might make sense
If no timeline was shared, a concise follow-up is often reasonable after about one to two weeks. If a timeline was shared, following up after that window is often reasonable while continuing other active applications. If labels are unclear, compare what “Pending” and “Under Review” usually mean and application in progress.
